Andor von Barsy

Photographer in Rotterdam 1927–1942

Frits Gierstberg

During the preparations for one of the opening exhibitions of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2006, a series of beautiful photos of the Rotterdam harbour in the late 1920s was found in the Rotterdam Municipal Archives. The creator of these unique and previously unknown pieces of art appeared to be the Hungarian Andor von Barsy, who had made a reputation for himself as a cameraman and filmmaker. It was known that Von Barsy was intensively engaged with (stereo) photography after his departure from Rotterdam, and largely also the Netherlands in 1942. Still his photographic activities came as a surprise. This was reinforced when it turned out that many of the discovered works of art – 297 in total – can be rated among the international milestones of photography from the interwar period.
