Hotel Transvaal catalyzing Urban Transformation

Sabrina Lindemann, Iris Schutten Ed(s)

In the long period between demolition and the erection of new buildings, districts often assume a dreary aspect. But this period also offers opportunities to give a new impulse to such a district. Draw inspiration from this book.

Hotel Transvaal is such a source of inspiration. Almost half of the council homes in the Transvaal district of The Hague (The Netherlands) were demolished and replaced by more expensive new homes. It was possible to reserve the most beautiful rooms in the buildings earmarked for demolition until demolition actually got under way. The interiors of the rooms were designed by artists and shopkeepers in the district.

This publication has been made possible through funding by the Stimuleringsfonds voor Architectuur, the Mondriaan Foundation, Fonds BKVB, the City Council of The Hague, Doen Foundation, Stroom The Hague, housing corporation Staedion and the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment.
