De rationele stad

Van bouwblok tot wooneenheid

Jean Castex, Jean-Charles Depaule, Philippe Panerai

The book tells the story of the demise of the urban block, the quintessential form of spatial organisation in the classic European city. The decline of the urban block is analysed in the context of Haussmann’s Paris, the English garden city, the Amsterdam School and Plan Zuid van Berlage, the new Frankfurt of Ernst May and Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse. In opposition to the anti-urban inclinations of modern architecture, the authors call for an architecture that is more closely geared to the city.

About the authors: Jean-Charles Depaule is an urban sociologist in Aix-en-Provence; Philippe Panerai is an architect, urban designer and professor at the École d’Architecture de Paris-Villemin.
