Dutch Dialogues: New Orleans–Netherlands

Common Challenges in Urbanized Deltas

Dale Morris

In late summer 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita laid to waste large segments of the US Gulf Coast and overwhelmed New Orleans. The government of the Netherlands quickly dispatched emergency aid, pumps and engineers to help with disaster recovery. Since then, Dutch and American engineers have worked to improve the flood protection infrastructure around New Orleans, and are engaging in cooperative research to reduce subsidence, restore wetlands and enhance ecosystem resiliency along the Louisiana Gulf Coast. This book demonstrates that common challenges are better addressed together.
