Ein lächelnd Heiligtum

Un Lieu sacré de l’amour et du calme

It doesn’t happen every day that architects have the opportunity of building in the historical setting of a lovingly restored estate in the French rural region of Gatinais, bordering on Burgundy. The architect’s task was to extend the ensemble of buildings by a new, but classically styled orangery. The architect, Christoph Sattler, took inspiration from historical models to design a refined building that neatly balances elegance and functionality. All elements were designed down to the smallest detail, carefully calibrated with each other and with the surrounding garden.

This volume documents the development process in impressive photographs, plans and drawings, providing a vivid picture of the orangery in the context of the entire ensemble. Well-informed essays on the history of the region and of the estate, on the historical significance of the architecture and on the particularities of the orangery typology as well as on the cultural history of the citrus fruit round off this sensual and informative book.

With contributions by Marcus Köhler, Fritz Lehnhof, and Christoph Sattler.
