The Architecture of John Ronan

John Ronan

Series: Graham Foundation/PA Press: New Voices in Architecture

Nothing is permanent; a building is a temporary proposition whose destiny is erasure, revision, or decay. Nothing is ever finished; the architect operates within a continuum, without beginning or end, in which the building does not exist in any stable way but is in a continual state of change.

Explorations, the first monograph by Chicago-based architect John Ronan, reveals the firm’s distinctive philosophy and open-ended design methodology, which has produced remarkable innovations in school design and adaptive renovations of old, non-functioning and decaying buildings.

In Explorations, Ronan presents twelve thoughtfully produced projects, including the transformation of Washington, D.C.’s historic Yale Steam Laundry building; the Urban Model High School, a new prototype school; and Precast Chapel, an economical concrete chapel for promoting interfaith dialogue and religious understanding.
