Het ontwerp van de openbare ruimte

De kern van de stedenbouw in het perspectief van de eenentwintigste eeuw

Han Meyer, Frank de Josselin de Jong, Maarten Jan Hoekstra

Designing public spaces is one of the urban planner’s core tasks. For urbanisation to emerge, networks of public spaces – both linear elements and nodes – must be given structure and a visual design. The primary considerations are not ‘design’ and ‘beautification’ of the public space but rather the creation of conditions for multifunctional and complex land use, for interaction and vitality.

Two- and three-dimensional drawings are essential elements of public space design. Good draughtsmanship is a combination of craftsmanship and knowledge of the different (potential) functions of the public space and an understanding of how the repertoire of public space types develops.
