Private homes have played an prominent role in the development of contemporary architecture since the second half of the 19th century. Before then, only the elite classes lived in architecturally designed dwellings. The industrial revolution and the development of democracy dramatically transformed Western society and changed the architect’s sphere of activity. Home building, and in particular mass housing construction, became one of the foremost design tasks of the 20th century. Many architects used commissions for detached houses as opportunities to experiment with space, materials, form and meaning.

This collection of small houses has a broad structure and provides insight into the development of the range of typologies and design approaches.
