New European Architecture 10/11

Hans Ibelings, Kirsten Hannema Ed(s)

A10's fourth yearbook features a selection of 20 projects previously published in A10 magazine, ranging from a chapel in Tarnów to a shopping mall in Montesarchio, from a rehabilitation centre in Arnhem and a mixed-use development in Leeds, to private houses in Brussels and Černķn.

The book opens with essays on large-scale urban developments in London and Paris, two cities trying to invent their status of metropolis, on the development of new sustainable systems, and on Ruhr.2010 – the 25th anniversary of the European Capitals of Culture. Furthermore, it contains three interviews: with architect and editor Stefano Boeri, with architect Bjarne Mastenbroek on the state of Dutch architecture and his new role as president of the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects, and with the young Estonian office Salto.

The yearbook also includes a 'review of the reviews' of three much-publicized projects: the MAXXI museum in Rome, designed by Zaha Hadid, SANAA’s Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, and the Vitra Haus in Weil am Rhein, designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
