About the author: Jos Gadet is an urban geographer. He works for the Urban Planning Department of the Amsterdam Local Authority. His role model is Jane Jacobs. Gadet wrote on the rise of successful Amsterdam neighbourhoods in the collection of essays De levende stad (2009), which accompanied the first Dutch translation of Jacobs’ masterpiece.
