Werner Graeff, 1901–1978

Der Künstleringenieur

Gerda Breuer Ed(s)

Inspired by the idea of a new type of artist, the “engineer” who would build a better world, the Bauhaus student and youngest member of the De Stijl movement, Werner Graeff, took the decision to abandon “free” art and to work on applied fields of design instead. As a genuine representative of constructivism, Graeff applied the innovation of the period following the First World War to art, successfully combining the impressions of rapidly developing technology, industrialisation and the resulting social transformation with new ideas and forms of expression in design.

This first comprehensive monograph on Werner Graeff casts light on the various aspects of his creative work, while a large number of photographs and reproductions provide extensive insight into the life and work of this artist engineer.
